Pangea is a term used to describe a supercontinent that is believed to have existed approximately 300 million years ago during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras. The term was first coined by Alfred Wegener in the early 20th century and is derived from the Greek words "pan" meaning entire and "gea" meaning earth.
Pangea was the result of a process known as plate tectonics, where the Earth's lithosphere (or outermost layer) is made up of large, rigid plates that move relative to one another. Over millions of years, these plates collided and separated to form different landmasses.
The existence of Pangea is supported by a number of geological, paleontological, and climatological evidence, including the matching shapes of different continents, the distribution of fossil plants and animals across disparate regions, and the existence of large-scale climate zones that spanned the length of the supercontinent.
The breakup of Pangea was a slow and gradual process that took place over millions of years. As the plates that made up the supercontinent moved apart, the resulting landmasses formed the continents we know today, such as North America, South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.
